The Westhaven Promenade - Stage 1 and 2

The Westhaven Promenade, a 5m wide boardwalk along the water’s edge in the heart of Westhaven Marina, has been a feature of the precinct since it opened in January 2015, and is used by many Aucklanders every day. The Promenade is a key linkage for cyclists and walkers, connecting the Harbour Bridge in the west, with the city centre and St Heliers in the east.

Construction started in August 2019. Please click here for the latest construction updates.

FEATURES OF the promenade:

  • The decking structure design accommodates anticipated king tide events, sea level rise and storm surges for 30-50 year lifespan.
  • Timber decking is Spotted Gum hardwood from Australia.  This timber is very hard and suited for marine environments
  • Given the scale of this public walkway, numerous details with the decking construction (joists, connection details, timber profile) are reviewed by international timber experts to make certain the deck complies with durability expectations. Stage 2 continues with the best of this practice, and new ideas.
  • The decking modules are 200mm wide for approx. 3m ‘movement’ area widths and 100mm wide along the approx. 1m wide harbourside balustrade
  • In Stage 1, the timber boardwalk areas over water utilise driven steel piles into the hard rock below the seafloor.  The piles included a zinc-aluminium primer coat and epoxy painted with marine a marine paint finish.  For Stage 2 a slim profiled concrete sub structure has been selected.
  • Western marina edge seawall was enhanced with supplemental rock armour placement that will be softened by retained pohutukawa trees and native coastal plantings
  • The consented balustrade reflects marine design and materials with open views into the water.  Deck surface lighting is integrated within the timber handrail.
  • Timber seating and timber kick-rails will provide pedestrian amenity and promenade edge safety.
  • The re-use of a 96m portion of the former X-Pier pontoon adjacent to Z-Pier will provide direct water access for recreational boating such as Dragonboats and stand up paddleboarding activities.  This structure will also provide protection for the promenade in storm events.
  • Stage 2 of the project includes carpark upgrades and associated stormwater treatment.
  • Several cultural design elements are integrated within the initial stage of the promenade to reflect the relationship of the promenade to significant sites and harbour landmarks at key points on the promenade in Westhaven Marina. Maori whakatauki (proverbs) and waka stories are integrated within the precast concrete terrace steps and land-sea fauna expressed at St Mary’s Bay.

Stage 2 is in CONSTRUCTION

Panuku Development Auckland is progressing the second stage of the Westhaven Promenade, to complete the 400m waterfront boardwalk connection from the Harbour Bridge, to Z Pier in the east.  While the first stage of construction included a temporary link along Westhaven Drive, the second stage will complete the waterfront route from Sails Restaurant to St Mary’s Bay.  Stage 2 will be a design continuation of Stage 1 with the incorporation of redesigned gates and berthing structures

The Promenade, which is Project 1 on the 2013 Westhaven Plan, the masterplanning document for Westhaven Marina, was planned to be completed in two stages. Until the second stage was completed, a footpath was constructed to use as a detour along Westhaven Drive between Sails Restaurant and Z Pier.

As part of the project, berth holders in this part of Westhaven will see their pier entrances modernised and reconfigured, with gates and trolley bays set back securely away from the pathway, and upgrades to services and utilities. We have contacted those customers whose berths will be reconfigured.
